‘Man vs Nature’ Series

Man is in constant battle
against Nature–
Though Man himself is a
part of Nature–
Therefore,
He battles Himself…
Learn
to
live
in harmony with Nature,
in harmony with Himself

Artist Series: ‘Man versus Nature’

This artist series is an ongoing exploration of the natural environment and its interaction with mankind. The theme occurs throughout M.F. Kline’s work, using the horse to represent Nature. The series began with the artist’s first stone sculpture, The Battle Of Man Against Nature, conceived in 1977. Inspired by the state of the world around her, M.F. Kline expanded the theme that currently spans nearly four decades and ten pieces.

The artist’s interest in this theme is rooted in her early childhood, where her first lesson of Man vs Nature took place—when man-made Machines replaced the Horse on the family farm. Over the years, she has been repeatedly reminded of this lesson, as humans continue to ravage and pillage the earth in pursuit of personal gain.

For Man is a part of Nature, yet he seeks to control it as if he is superior. The current state of our earth reflects the result of this attempted and often failed act to control. The medium of the series is in stone, thus immortalizing the constant conflict in a substance created by Nature that Man cannot destroy.

The series offers hope for the future and a path towards redemption with Harmony of Man & Nature, a picture of a world where Man learns to live with Nature, and thus Himself.
